South Africa’s biggest home victory by runs — and one of their most dominant Test performances since readmission — came at Johannesburg in 1995, led by Hansie Cronje and inspired by the all-round brilliance of Fanie de Villiers.

Pakistan’s proud record of winning at least one Test in their inaugural series against every opponent came crashing down, as injuries, poor selection, and weak batting compounded their misery.

With Waqar Younis and Rashid Latif ruled out, Pakistan fielded a half-fit Aamir Nazir, who arrived from Pakistan barely an hour before play and broke down twice mid-spell. Meanwhile, South Africa’s top order faltered early before Jonty Rhodes (74) and Brian McMillan (113) stitched a blistering 157-run stand. McMillan’s maiden century and De Villiers’ quickfire 52 helped South Africa post a commanding total at nearly four an over.

When Pakistan batted, De Villiers took control — dismissing the top order with pace and precision, then bowling Ijaz Ahmed around his legs after tea. Salim Malik (99) fought bravely but fell just short of a third consecutive hundred.

Enforcing follow-on pressure, South Africa extended their lead to 489 before declaring. Pakistan’s chase disintegrated again as De Villiers and Donald ripped through the lineup. Inzamam-ul-Haq (95) provided the only resistance, but Pakistan folded on the final morning.
