In the Earth's history, especially during the Carboniferous period around 300 million years ago, oxygen levels were much higher than today, which allowed insects to grow to enormous sizes. For instance, there were dragonflies with wingspans up to 2 feet (60 cm) across!

Scientists believe that the higher oxygen levels supported the larger size of these insects because oxygen is crucial for the efficient functioning of their respiratory systems. Today, insects are much smaller due to lower oxygen levels and other evolutionary factors.
