In front of a roaring Eden Gardens crowd of nearly 100,000, Australia once again proved their big-match temperament, beating India by 37 runs to lift the TVS Cup trophy.
Batting first, Australia were pegged back early by India’s spinners on a slow pitch. With Gilchrist and Hayden dismissed inside the first 8 overs, runs were hard to come by. But Michael Clarke (44 off 28) provided late fireworks, lifting Australia to a competitive 235/5.
India looked well-placed in reply as Sachin Tendulkar (38) thrilled the Kolkata crowd with sublime strokes. But the turning point came when Andy Bichel dismissed Tendulkar, sparking an Indian collapse. Clarke’s all-round brilliance (2 wickets) and Ian Harvey’s clever slower balls (4/40) ripped through the middle and lower order. India folded, falling short by 37 runs, as Australia lifted yet another trophy.
Despite the defeat, Tendulkar’s consistency earned him the Man of the Series award, while Clarke was named Man of the Match for his decisive impact.
