Nubian Plate (western part of Africa)
Somalian Plate (eastern part of Africa)
These plates are moving away from each other along a rift known as the East African Rift, which stretches from the Afar region in Ethiopia down to Mozambique.
2. Rifting Process
The East African Rift is an example of a continental rift, where forces within the Earth pull the crust apart. This rifting is driven by the upwelling of hot magma from the mantle beneath the Earth's surface, creating tension that eventually splits the landmass.
3. Formation of New Ocean
