The Coca-Cola Champions Trophy 1998 in Dhaka featured an intriguing contest between India and West Indies on October 31, 1998 (day/night match).

After winning the toss, India chose to bat first but immediately ran into trouble against the West Indies pace attack. Mervyn Dillon delivered a devastating opening spell, dismissing Sachin Tendulkar and Mohammad Azharuddin within his first three overs, putting India under early pressure.

Young fast bowler Reon King, playing his international debut, also impressed with a sharp spell of pace. With wickets falling at the other end, Sourav Ganguly struggled to find support, until Robin Singh helped stabilize the innings.

Despite India’s efforts, the total was never going to seriously challenge the West Indies batting line-up.

In reply, West Indies started aggressively, racing past 100 runs in just 15 overs. However, captain Brian Lara played a controlled and responsible innings, slowing down the tempo against India’s spinners to ensure there were no mistakes.

Interestingly, Lara appeared determined not to lose his personal battle with Sachin Tendulkar, choosing patience over risk as West Indies comfortably stayed ahead of the required run rate.

In the end, West Indies secured a comfortable six-wicket victory with three overs to spare, completing a professional chase.
