Hills are formed mainly due to natural geological processes over a long period of time. Here are the main ways hills can form:

1. Tectonic Activity
When tectonic plates (the large pieces of Earth’s crust) push against each other, the land can buckle and rise, forming hills and mountains.

Example: The Himalayan foothills formed this way.

2. Volcanic Activity
Sometimes, lava from volcanoes builds up over time, forming a hill or even a mountain.

These are called volcanic hills.

Example: Some hills in Maharashtra are of volcanic origin.

3. Erosion
Wind, water, and ice can wear down mountains, and the leftover smaller elevations are called hills.

Also, sediments can get deposited in areas, slowly creating small uplands or hills.

4. Glacial Activity
During the Ice Age, glaciers moved over land, and as they melted, they left behind mounds of rock and soil, which became hills.
